While each home has its own unique charms, and there are many different buyers, all with their own thoughts, there are some features which are more popular than others. A recent study spoke to 1,000 adults in the United Kingdom, and it was found that 82% of respondents said they would like to buy a period property.

Period properties are popular but expensive

The same study also showed 69% of respondents saying they would like to buy a period property, but admitting they didn’t think they would be able to afford this style of home. A period property is often more expensive than new-build homes, or properties which were developed in the 1930s, the 1950s or the 1970s. These were busy eras in the UK property building sector, and many of the homes from these decades are available at more affordable prices.

There is also the fact period properties are commonly found in affluent parts of towns and cities. These homes are likely to have been well-maintained, and it is understandable many buyers have a desire to own a house like this. Of course, for many people, this ambition will be nothing more than a pipe dream as opposed to being a genuine ambition.

However, originality and authenticity is clearly an important issue for many would-be buyers. The same study, undertaken by a discount flooring company, revealed 51% of respondents said they looked for original features when reviewing a property.

Original windows are loved by many buyers

The original windows of a property were cited by 42% of respondents, 40% of people said they loved to see feature fireplaces, and 37% of respondents cited real wooden floorboards or tiled flooring as the thing they want to see in a property. Other popular features were cornicing and ceiling roses, and original radiators.

If your home doesn’t have any of these features, there isn’t a lot to worry about. However, if you do have these features in your home, it makes sense to present them as best as you can. No matter the style or age of your home, you should find the leading element in the property, and then present this to buyers.

If you are fortunate enough to stay in a home that has a number of original features, it makes sense to draw attention to them, and make them the cornerstone of the sales process.
